The Department of General Studies at National Skills University Islamabad successfully hosted an important academic session yesterday titled “Islam, Constitution, and Pakistani Society.”
The event brought together students, faculty members, and research scholars from various disciplines for a meaningful and thought-provoking discussion.
Two distinguished scholars delivered the keynote addresses:
Prof. Dr. Husnul Amin, Director General, National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Quaid-i-Azam University,
presented a rich and insightful analysis of the historical and intellectual relationship between Islam and Pakistan, the evolutionary dimensions of the Two-Nation Theory, and the spread of Islam in South Asia. From a sociological perspective, he explained how Pakistan’s political culture, institutional structures, and collective identity remain deeply rooted in Islamic tradition. Referring to Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities, he elaborated on how modern nations are “imagined” and how intellectual narratives shape collective identities.
Prof. Dr. Aziz ur Rehman, Hafiz, Director, School of Law, Quaid-i-Azam University,
delivered a comprehensive and compelling talk on the significance of the Constitution of Pakistan, the role of constitutional order in safeguarding the state, and the protection of civil liberties. He underscored that the constitution functions as the fundamental social contract between the state and its citizens, and that deviation from constitutional principles leads to political instability, institutional friction, and social disorder. He noted that dismissing the constitution out of momentary frustration is both misguided and dangerous, and emphasized that in a diverse and segmented society like Pakistan, drafting a new constitution is nearly impossible, making continued commitment to the 1973 Constitution essential for national stability.
