Overview

With a changing job market, there has been a shift in the required job skills as well. The dawn of 21st century has seen the demand for a new job skillset in workforce that was previously limited to being adept in literacy and numeracy skills with a focus on content and knowledge only. The courses of General Studies are designed to provide students with the basic knowledge necessary to engage in higher level of critical thinking, discipline, basic scientific principles, ethics and morality, communication skills, analysis of information, cultural diversity, and patriotism. The world is complex and interconnected, to understand the bigger reality one needs to get help from disciplines like physics, chemistry, literature, history and ethics. The courses offered by this department aim to act as a bridge between the core field knowledge and its applicability in the real world. It teaches to operate in a dynamic professional and cultural environment, to implement the knowledge learned in diverse situations through logical and creative thinking, and to find divergent solutions to the novel problems. These courses cultivate in students’ progressive ideas, tolerance, and social responsibility. In the age of technology, these courses help to act and decide rationally and logically according to the situation. They also emphasize on experimental and activity-based learning.

The department of General Studies also prepares the students of all fields to adapt to any change in their careers without the fear of becoming redundant. It equips students with the skills that are transferable across disciplines and careers. Some of these skills include the ability to think critically and creatively, to adapt to different cultural and social environments, to think divergently and draw multiple interpretations of information that can be logically defended, and to possess effective interpersonal skills. These skills enable the students to contribute constructively in a dynamic workforce. Apart from fulfilling the demands of employment, General Studies strive to benefit individual and society at large. It contributes to making students responsible, informed, and responsive citizens. Thus, the department aims to inculcate intellectual, scientific, moral and social responsibility among the students.

Department Mission

The mission of General Studies department is to enable the students to think creatively and critically, to co-exist and operate ethically in a culturally diverse environment, and to keep their inquisitiveness for objective truths alive so that they become informed and active citizenry.
