BS in Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a combination of biological disciplines like cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics etc with technologies like chemical engineering, information technology, and robotics. The BS Biotechnology program at NSU is providing the strong concept of “Empowering Biology with Technology” and application-oriented undergraduate education to the students. This is an innovative program integrating interdisciplinary fields like bioprocessing, nanobiotechnology, bioinformatics, industrial, environmental, and medical biotechnology into an undergraduate curriculum.

Vision

Providing high-caliber graduates and aspiring molecular life scientists equipped with hi-tech scientific and technological expertise to meet national and international contemporary needs.

Mission

The graduates will be provided with world-class education with special emphasis on critical thinking, intensive experiential learning, and effective application of the scientific methods to meet the socio-economic challenges by performing cutting-edge research and generating new tools to enhance the quality of life.

Program Goals

The goals of the Biotechnology program are to:

  • Establish competence in the field of Biotechnology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge consistent with Biotechnology.
  • Emulate the professional standards of Biotechnology.
  • Contribute to the needs of skilled professionals in Biotechnology.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

Identifying the needs to build up the undergraduate program that nurtures collaborative interactions and cross disciplinary training, our program has following objectives:

  • PEO 1:Prepare pliable students with a dynamic foundation in the skills relevant to the growing world of biotechnology.
  • PEO 2:Provides practical training to the students with advance and innovative skills and techniques of biotechnology.
  • PEO 3:Integrates the theoretical and practical knowledge through the use of cognitive and kinesthetic learning approach with audio-visual aids.
  • PEO 4:Distinctive combination of practical, hands-on biotechnology training with cutting-edge biotechnology research and teaching.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Upon the completion of the Program, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic interactions of biomolecules for the functioning of life at the cellular level and apply this knowledge to the solution of complex biotechnological problems/applications.
  • Explain the basic principles, tools, techniques, applications, and ethical issues associated with genetic engineering.
  • Illustrate the methodology to establish animal and plant cell culture and its therapeutic applications.
  • Apply the technical skills learned to establish nurseries for horticultural and agricultural crops and compare the pros and cons of transgenic plants on the environment.
  • Explain the concepts of intellectual property management and handling of GMOs.
  • Describe the various aspects of biotechnological applications in fermentation industries and their applications.
  • Able to apply the concepts of biotechnology in environmental and pollution management.
  • Critically evaluate the already available scientific contribution in all forms of media and identify the new approaches for the solution of scientific problems.
  • Demonstrate skills in generating and testing hypotheses and performing experimentation by using advanced biochemical and molecular techniques.
  • Able to perform computational and statistical analysis of experimental data by using statistical and bioinformatics tools to draw conclusions.
  • Able to explain the concept of NGS and be able to determine the phylogenetic relationships.
  • Exhibit the ability to work effectively in an independent environment and in collaboration with others as a team member.
  • Exhibit the growth in academic performance and meet their global citizenship responsibilities
